Full Text

Sampson has gotten a denial from Commodore Schley that the latter talked of ignoring the mines and making a dash into Santiago harbor. This is creditable to Schley's prudence and good sense. But that is not the point in the controversy involving these two officers. It has to do with Sampson's deliberate ignoring of Schley's heroic part in the destruction of Cervera's fleet, at which Sampson was not present. Another important point is to ascertain how it happened that so fine an officer as Schley was superseded by one inferior to him in rank.
