Friendships Feature
Of Coburn Night
Coburn night was celebrated this
evening in the Elks' hall, when 275
Coburn alumni, students, faculty and
friends gathered to renew acquaintances
and promote Coburn spirit.
The affair opened with an informal
reception in the living rooms of
the hall and then all adjourned to
the main hall, where a supper was
served by the ladies of the Universalist
church. The menu was as
follows: Ham, mashed potatoes, fruit
salad, rolls, coffee, doughnuts and
cake.
During the supper Dick Staunton
of Colby entertained with piano
solos. After the supper the entire
gathering joined in singing the
school song, "The Crimson and the
Gold," and then Principal Harthorn,
who acted as toastmaster, spoke on
the meaning of the Coburn song and
all that Coburn stood for. He told
of the work being done by the school
and lauded the friends of the school
for their fine support. Mr. Harthorn
then introduced Mayor Tebbetts, who
gave a short address on the part that
Coburn played in the civic life of
the city and also related his pleasant
experiences
with Principal
Harthorn, who is connected with the
city government.
The next speaker of the evening
was President Roberts of Colby College.
The president told of the fine
men and women with whom he has
come in contact who were graduates
of Coburn and also told of the great
debt that Colby owed to Coburn in
sending so many students to the college.
Mr. Harthorn then introduced Edwin
Leary as a representative of the
boys of Coburn and the latter told
of the work of Coburn at the present
time, laying stress on the athletic
achievements and the need of
cooperation among students and
alumni. Priscilla Clark did likewise
in stating the various girls' activities
and also emphasized the need
of cooperation.
Mr. Harthorn then praised the
various workers of the school and
introduced Mr. Hoxie, the superintendent
of grounds and buildings,
who though over 80 years of age,
still carries on his work in a noble
manner.
The final speaker of the evening
was Dr. Whittemore, one of the trustees.
Dr. Whittemore paid tribute
to the faculty and former officers of
the school and paid especial tribute
to Dr. Thayer, who was unable to
be present, the late Dr. Hardy and
Dr. Hanson, former principal. He
told of the famous men who have
graduated from Coburn, among them
being six governors.
Songs and cheers were given between
each speech and the supper
closed with the group singing "America."
The gathering then adjourned
to the school building, where fireplaces
gave the school a cheery atmosphere
and alumni gathered
around to talk old times. The Coburn
basket ball team played the
Delta Upsilon fraternity team and
the girls played the alumni as part
of the program.
