HIGH COURT OF IMPEACHMENT.
Friday, February 15.
The Court was opened at 10 A. M. Present the MANAGERS, accompanied by the house of representatives; and Mr. CHASE, attended by his counsel. We omitted to notice, in our last, the appearance of Mr. Charles Lee, as counsel for Judge Chase.
William Wirt, Meriwether Jones, Hugh Holmes, Aquilla Hall, Thomas Hall, John Harvie, Risden Bishop, and Philip Stewart, were again called on the part of the prosecution, without answering.
The President enquired of the Managers whether they had closed the testimony which it was intended to adduce in behalf of the house of representatives.
Mr. Rodney replied that several of the witnesses being absent, it was the hope of the Managers that should they hereafter attend, their testimony would be received after that on the part of Judge Chase was closed.
The President observed that such a desire appeared to be reasonable: but that the future admission of testimony on the part of the house of representatives must depend on the discretion of the court at the trial.
The President, then addressing himself to Judge Chase, informed him that he might proceed with his defence:
When Mr. Harper rose, and in a speech of about half an hour, stated the grounds of the defence which the respondent meant to make.
Samuel Ewing, Edward J. Coale, William Rawle, William Meredith, Luther Martin, James Winchester, and William Marshall, were examined on behalf of Judge Chase. The court adjourned at about 3 o'clock:
Saturday, February 16.
