An enigmatic Latin-style inscription on a marble at Senator Volta's country seat near Bologna, Italy, describes Aelia Aelia Crispis paradoxically as neither man nor woman yet all, dying by hunger, steel, and poison, lying everywhere, erected by Lucius Agatho Priscus as a tomb that is both body and tomb.

Full Text
The following Enigmatical Inscription, engraved on a Marble in Senator Volta's Country Seat, near Bologna in Italy, transcribed from the Royal Magazine, is inserted at the Request of one of our Correspondents.
AELIA AELIA CRISPIS,
Neither a man, nor a woman, nor an hermaphrodite,
Nor a girl, nor a youth, nor an old woman,
Neither a matron, a whore, nor a maid,
But all them.
She died
Neither by hunger, nor by steel, nor by poison,
But by all of them.
She lies
Neither in the air, nor in the water, nor in the ground,
But every where.
LUCIUS AGATHO PRISCIUS.
Neither a lover, nor a husband, nor a friend,
Nor in tears, nor in joy, nor in sorrow,
Erected this, which is
Neither mound, nor pyramid, nor tomb.
But all of them.
But to whom he knows, and yet knows not.
This is a tomb which has no body within,
This is a body which has no tomb without
But the same thing is both body and tomb to itself.
