The American Society for Colonizing the Free People of Color of the United States, held its annual meeting on Saturday, January 9th, 1819, at Dr. Laurie's Church.
In the absence of the Hon. Bushrod Washington, President of the Society, the Hon. Henry Clay presided.
The meeting was opened by the reading of the annual Report of the Board of Managers.
General John Mason being called to take the chair, Mr. Clay withdrew in order to offer the following resolution.
On motion of Mr. Clay,
Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed to lay before the Congress of the United States, or any committee or committees which may be appointed by either branch thereof, the information which has been collected through the means of this Society, shewing the practicability of the object of its institution, and to respectfully, but earnestly, solicit the countenance, aid, and support of Congress in the accomplishment of that object.
Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Key compose the committee.
On motion of Mr. Mills,
Resolved, unanimously, That the thanks of the Society be presented to the President and Board of Managers, for the zeal, intelligence, and ability which they have evinced in the management of the concerns of the Society the past year; and that the report of the Board of Managers be printed.
The Society then proceeded to the appointment of officers for the present year; when the following persons were elected:
