Messrs. Editors:— In your paper of the 23d ult., I see that you have made a serious charge against Gov. Yell— too serious a one to be passed by in silence, by his friends. I was fearful that in the course of this unhappy controversy, the friends of either aspirant to the U. S. Senate, would make charges and recriminations unworthy of good democrats, and my worst fears have been realized.

You say that Gov. Yell wrote to the whig nominee and pledged himself not to run against him (Walker). I cannot believe for a moment that one word of the above is true— pardon me, my dear sirs; I cannot believe you until you furnish evidence— proof of what you assert; for this is no small matter : prove it, gentlemen, and I am with you against Gov. Yell; I could never forgive such perfidy; I could never forgive the democrat who makes a pledge to a whig, "If Ashley pledged to Yell— I can forgive him; for they are both democrats; but I cannot forgive or forget if Yell pledged himself to Walker, I have not forgotten the efforts made by Walker, last election, to propagate federalism and his abuse of democracy; but, gentlemen, you must prove what you say against Old Archy before I change.

You say that in his letter he styles democrats a "Swiss Corps:" I care not whether he calls us hireling soldiers or dead Dutchmen, if he had not said that he had "no ambition to command" us.

Now, Messrs. Editors, is there any truth in all you say; I demand the proof: you have set yourselves up as disseminators of truth, and many persons may be induced to believe that you are telling us the truth without asking you or the proof: I do not doubt that you think what you say is true; but you may be imposed upon by some of Gov. Yell's enemies; Therefore give us the proof, or make the people acknowledgements.

It is melancholy to think that there is a probability that you can prove these things against Gov. Yell. I say probability, because you certainly did not make such statements without a probability; but for the present I fear Old Archy: hope there is no possibility of you proving it.

Since pledges are all the go now, I will pledge myself and some dozen of my neighbors, that if you prove your statements, I will go with you hand in hand against Yell and for Ashley.
