A bill to create such a department is now pending before the House of Representatives after having been passed unanimously by the Senate.
The need for such a central agency has been advocated for many years by governmental bodies, a spokesman for the League of Women Voters said.
It will save an estimated $15,000,000 to $25,000,000 a year, which the Michigan Tax Study Commission reported is now being lost under the present system, under which 47 separate agencies have a part in collecting revenues.
The bill would abolish the state board of tax administration and set up a department of revenue as a centralized collection agency for all state taxes. A score of other states have adopted similar legislation and in almost every case have experienced an increase in collections from existing taxes, usually also with a decrease in collection costs, it is said.
