Full Text

COLLECTOR MURPHY'S CANDIDATE.

At the Rapid Transit Meeting, at Brevoort Hall, on the 14th inst., Mr. John Foley said: "We will guarantee to have the road finished in time to invite our next Governor (turning to Mayor Hall) and President Hoffman over the road." This Mr. Foley is the gentleman that Collector Murphy compelled the Custom House officials to nominate last Fall as a Republican candidate in opposition to Joseph S. Dewey, the regular Republican candidate for Assembly in the Twenty-first District. Yet Mr. Murphy denounces all Republicans who didn't vote for Foley as Tammany Republicans. Mr. Dewey has always been a Republican, and Foley has been "all things at times, and nothing long." Of course, Mr. Murphy likes men of the weathercock kind. He has been Democrat and Republican so often himself in the last five years, that he cannot abide any man who bears a clean record for consistency. The sooner President Grant retires Murphy the particular friend of Foley, the better Republicans in this vicinity will be pleased, and the quicker will the breach in the ranks be closed.
