Good Homes
For His Men
CHANUTE AIR FORCE
BASE, Ill.-Here's a general
after the soldier's own heart.
Maj. Gen. B. E. Gates is
so concerned with housing
problems of his men (some
civilian workers with the
same problems are included)
that he has gone to work and
arranged for a builder to put
up houses near the base, at
low cost and low payments.
The general, known by the
nickname "Hungry,"
said
that Hugo Schneider of
Springfield, Ill., agreed to
build homes for $500 down,
total cost of $6,000 and
monthly payments of $40.
The homes will be on 60 by
100 foot lots, and will have
four bedrooms.
The builder, he says, wants
only $100 profit on each home.
"Can you beat that?" asks the
general. "Landscaped, too. This
fellow doesn't wear the mink
coat philosophy."
His action followed long investigation, and the support given
him by his men, who swamped
him with $500 deposit checks,
which the general won't cash until
the men have looked over model
homes.
The project is under way, and
the general feels happy about it.
He's a general who lives by
the Army book, which says that
an officer will look after the interests of his men--a fact too
many among the high brass tend
to forget.
J. W. McGinness, president
Lodge 225, called the general's
action to TRAINMAN NEWS' attention.
