N. P. CAR SHOPS AT DICKINSON TO BE CLOSED
Part of Force to Be Transferred--Rest Will Have to Seek New Jobs
Dickinson, N. D., April 17.--Closing of the Northern Pacific car shops in Dickinson on May 1, has been ordered by the operating department of the company. About 35 men will be affected by the order which will lay off not only the car building crew but the inspectors and the stationary firemen at the roundhouse where the boiler rooms will be closed down.
Officials who were here, says the Dickinson Press, stated that the change was being made in the interests of economy and in keeping with the plan of the company to lengthen its division which makes drastic changes along the entire system necessary.
To Transfer Ten Men
Of the car force which will be discontinued here, the Press continues, five men will be transferred to Mandan and five to Glendive under the order. It is possible that a few more may be taken care of at other points. The remainder will be forced to seek new jobs.
The carshops, erected in 1920 and claimed to be the finest and best equipped on the system, will be boarded up and the machinery left here intact for the time. Officials were emphatic in their declaration, however, that the company had no intention of reopening them at a future date.
The boiler rooms which, since the closing of the roundhouse, have been used to furnish air and steam to the carshops and the few stalls left open for local freight and switch engines, will be closed. Stoves will be placed in the roundhouse to heat these stalls when necessary.
