The pernicious influence of
Chamberlain and Sewell has at
last brought about what I antici-
pated. Yesterday evening while
I was making a seizure at Gill &
Pla'z's mill I was approached by
a body of men, who, after cursing,
waving at me, and threatening my
life, took possession of some logs
I was about to seize, and said they
would bore holes in me big enough
to
WALK A JACKASS THROUGH
if I did not leave soon.
James Collins, Joseph Martin

GAINEY.
Gainey is credited with having
been appointed by Pitkin a deputy
United States marshal, and as he
has not yet been removed, he
must still hold his warrant as such.
If that be the case, his communi-
cating upon official matters with
any but his superior officer, the
United States marshal, and as is
shown he has done by the tele-
gram, his official conduct is the
most bit irregular, and shows that
his zeal in this instance to
CREATE A SENSATION
has carried him outside of his du-
ties.
In connection with the sensation
already made by this "policy" while
located at Calcasieu, it is whis-
pered about the Customhouse that
he is the same individual who
figured conspicuously here a year
or so since with the celebrated
John F. Barrett, Jr., in some of
the latter individual's crooked cot-
tton investigations.
