A PROPHET!

The Hon Wheeler Martin of Rhode Island, in a long letter addressed to Gen. Jackson in the Literary Subaltern, renounces his allegiance to the Military Chief, whom he tells to "put his household in order- be prepared for the event, for the finger of Heaven points to Henry Clay as the next President."

Judge Martin it appears, relies upon his spirit of prophecy for the accomplishment of the annunciation, and in some degree, upon the elevation of the point to which he has ascended in order to vaticinate. "I had (he says to Gen. Jackson) proclaimed you to be the next President, in the presence of the world and my God, from the high and towering BAPTIST STEEPLE, in the town of Providence; from the same place, where I had a few years before, proclaimed John Q. Adams."

"From the same towering height from which I proclaimed the ascendancy of John Q Adams to the Presidential Chair--from the same sublime eminence from which I proclaimed and declared the election of Andrew Jackson; from the same lofty height, I now proclaim, that HENRY CLAY will be the next President of the U. States."

Far be from us, the impiety of questioning the fulfilment of predictions so agreeable!

The Editor of the Subaltern has caught the infection of Judge Martin's whimsicality, who he says "from the highest point of one of our most splendid public edifices, has proclaimed Henry Clay to be the next President, and we doubt not his proclamation will be verified."

"As early as the year 1821, from the same lofty height, Judge Martin proclaimed that John Quincy Adams would be President of the United States; and, in the year 1824, the proclamation was made good -the prophecy of the Judge was verified to its full extent!

"In the month of August, 1826, from the same lofty point--near the high heavens--Judge Martin proclaimed that Andrew Jackson would be the successor of John Quincy Adams;--that the hero of New Orleans, would distance 'the scion of the house of Braintree.' The proclamation was made good as we all know, and thus do we see that the prophecies of the Honorable Mr. Martin, are always fulfilled.

On the 5th of Aug. at 12-o'clock, 1830, Mr. Martin proclaimed to the world. that Henry Clay, will be the next President of the United States. That the proclamation will be made good we cannot doubt; for 'the seer of the day hath said it,' and who shall dispute it?"
