TUSKEGEE AIR CADETS INVADE GATE CITY TODAY: SELLOUT CROWD AWAITS COLORFUL TWINBILL AT PONCEY PARK
The "Lightning" P-38's and P-40's at the Tuskegee Air Base will have brief rest today, while the famous Tuskegee Air Cadets invade the Gate City for colorful twin-bill with the crack Charlotte Black Hornets at Ponce de Leon Park. Atlanta fans have been well pleased with the brand of ball played by other service teams seen in action here this season, and a record-breaking crowd is expected to pack the park today to see the Tuskegee Air Field Tigers in their initial appearance. Like other service teams the Tuskegee nine is composed of a brilliant array of former big league stars, which means that the Black Hornets face their most gruelling assignment of the year.
According to press reports the personnel of the Army team includes stars from the Homestead Grays, Newark Eagles, Cincinnati Clowns, Brooklyn Royals, Philadelphia Stars, Chicago American Giants, Birmingham Black Barons and other big league teams. The outstanding stars include: Elton Mackey, Andrew Williams, Joseph Bowers, George Weeks, Albert Clark, James Green, James Wade, Frank Boston, Charles Hatcher, Joseph Pope, Harry Kirksey, Ellsworth Kelly, Fred Brown, and Arthur Gray.
REVAMPED BLACK HORNETS OUT TO UPSET SERVICEMEN
The Charlotte Black Hornets, with "Slick" Coleman pitching a doubleheader, made a great impression on Atlanta fans two weeks ago, and today, the revamped North Carolina team will be out to upset the servicemen. Foster, the brilliant southpaw, who completely silenced the Black Crackers bats in the final game of their three game series may start on the mound today against the Air Cadets. Other Black Hornet stars include: Hall, who made a hit with Atlanta fans on first base; Brannam, lanky rightfielder, who smashed a homer over the sign boards in rightfield; and Laury, another hard-hitter. The Hornets are banking on taking the soldiers in stride, and will then throw their might against the Black Crackers, when they resume their extended series, Tuesday night under the floodlights at Ponce de Leon Park.
BLACK CRACKER MACHINE PLAYS HERE ENROUTE EAST
When the Black Crackers face the Black Hornets here, Tuesday night, they will be enroute East on an extended tour that will carry them as far as Hartford, Conn. They will play in Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Newark, and New York and other points. The Cracks have had very little rest in the past two weeks, but Skipper Manning has been given enough good pitchers to keep up this pace for the remainder of the season. After playing several other teams in North Carolina, the Cracks joined the Black Hornets in Knoxville for a barnstorming tour of Tennessee and South Georgia. Today the Cracks will be seen in action in the Crescent City. Atlanta fans will be elated to know that "Slick" Coleman is now wearing a Black Cracker uniform. "Bozo" Jackson has recovered from a "bad" leg, also Davis, hard-hitting leftfielder, and Brennam King, outfielder and pitcher deluxe has rounded into form on the mound.
