We yesterday received the following private dispatch from Dan De Quille, the well known Comstock expert. It was forwarded Friday night, but did not reach us until yesterday morning:
I have just come out of the mine. The face of the 2200 level is in ore that will mill $120 per ton. I saw it after the last blast was fired. The 2100 crosscut is too near the top of the vein. It will not amount to much.
This, perhaps, is as correct a statement of the situation as has been given to the public. It demonstrates two things. First, that the new bonanza is not a failure. Secondly, that it will take time to develop it. Mr. Mackay gave it as his opinion the other day that the 2200 level would turn out all right, but he added that it would take six months to open the ore body. We have no doubt that this is true. The whole thing has been poorly managed. The rise in the stock was premature. The insiders were mistaken and are as badly hurt, probably, as anybody. The excavation for the sump, forty feet below the 2200 level showed rich ore all the way down, richer, in fact, at the lowest point reached than elsewhere. All these things combined would seem to indicate that the heart of the bonanza lies deeper. We should not be at all surprised if between the 2200 and 2500 levels there was found to exist the grandest body of rich ore ever brought to light on the great lode. The Crown Point-Belcher bonanza was found between the 800 and 1100-foot levels; that of the Con. Virginia-California, between the 1400 and 1700, and now it would be in order for the Sierra Nevada find to extend from the 2200 to the 2500. At all events, we are disposed to believe that the mine lies deeper than the present crosscut.

Dan De Quille's dispatch reveals rich ore at 2200 level milling $120 per ton, but 2100 crosscut is poor; development needs six months; poor management led to premature stock rise hurting insiders; sump excavation shows richer ore deeper, suggesting grand bonanza between 2200-2500 levels.
