INTERESTING.
The Secretary of the Treasury, in pursuance of a resolve of Congress, is collecting information from all parts of the U. States on the subject of manufactures. He has addressed a circular to the postmaster of this town, requesting of him to forward a statement of all the manufactories established in the vicinity of this place. It is of the highest importance that accurate information should be procured, and that government should know what is the present state of manufactures in this country.
With a view to obtain this information, the following hints are suggested for the consideration of those patriotic citizens who feel interested in promoting home manufactures:
Let a committee of three or more persons be appointed in each town in this county, who will undertake to collect all the necessary facts, and arrange their statements under the following heads:
1st manufactures of Wool.
What number of carding machines are there in the town of ---
What quantity of Wool is carded by each machine in a year.
How many clothiers' shops are there.
What quantity of cloth is dressed in each and the value of it.
2d. Manufactures of flax.
How many yards of linen and tow cloths are made in the town of---, and the value of it.
Manufactures of leather. How much leather is made in the town of ---, and the value.
Manufactures of iron, other than the common blacksmith work.
Manufactures of cotton.
Manufactures of hats.
In addition to the facts arranged under these heads, it would be important to gain information on the following points:
1st. What is the quantity of flax and hemp raised in each town, and the price.
2d. Can the quantity of those articles already raised, be much increased, and to what extent.
3d. If it can be, what encouragement is wanting to induce farmers to turn their attention more to the cultivation of these articles.
In the present circumstances of the United States, it is of the first necessity that the resources of this country should be known. We hope therefore that our fellow citizens of all parties, will cheerfully communicate such information as they may possess. The manufactures of our country are becoming every day of more importance to the people.
We shall be driven to rely more upon manufactures as our foreign commerce labors under increasing embarrassment. The enterprise of our citizens must be directed to the improvement of the internal resources of the country or we shall soon experience still greater evils, from depending too much upon the faithless politics of European Courts.
