PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATIONS

A Convention of Republicans from all the towns of RHODE-ISLAND, has nominated Mr Monroe for President, and Gov. Tompkins for Vice President. In New-York, a caucus of the Republican members of the Legislature have nominated Gov. Tompkins for President.

It appears to be pretty certain, that Mr. Monroe will have a majority of votes in the Washington Caucus. It appears also, to be equally certain that the majority of republicans throughout the union, look to Mr. Monroe as the most suitable candidate. The only objection we have heard made to him is, that he is a native of Virginia. Whatever may be our private feelings on the subject, we heartily reciprocate the wishes of the editor of the Albany Register, as to the union of our party. The greatest misfortune that could befall the country, would be the election of a federal President through the disunion of the republicans. After the republicans had triumphantly carried the country through the war, and against the most violent and unprincipled opposition of the whole federal party—raised our character to an elevation it never possessed, except at the close of the revolutionary struggle—to suffer the government 'o fall into' the hands of these same factious and turbulent federalists, would be a libel on republics.

Were our individual preference the guide in selecting a candidate, that preference might have led to the nomination of Mr. Adams. But we remember that we are only individuals—that others have as fair a claim to their preference as we, and that the principle that the will of the majority shall govern, is the very foundation of republican government—

This rule must prevail in a party as well as in a nation; or the principles of disunion will be introduced, and the feuds of the majority will enable the minority to succeed in seizing upon the reins of government.
