Pride of Detroit Off on First Leg of Long Flight

Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, Aug. 27-(AP)—The monoplane "Pride of Detroit" hopped off for Croydon, England, at 5:14 a. m. eastern standard time today.

The Stinson Detroiter, which carried William S. Brock, pilot and Edward F. Schlee, Detroit business man, is off on the first leg of an attempt to set a new world record for a trip around the world.

The record of 28 days, 14 hours and 30 minutes for globe circling which Block S. Evans and Linton Wells, who used ships and trains as well as air planes. The distance between Harbor Grace and Croydon, near London, is 2,350 miles.

Gets Start on Two Planes
CURTISS FIELD, N. Y. Aug. 27-(AP)—By hopping off on the first leg of their 'round the world flight from Harbor Grace today, the crew of the monoplane "Pride of Detroit" "jumped the gun" as they had indicated they might, on two other planes, whose crews had hoped to participate in the three-cornered trans-Atlantic air marathon.

Up to two days ago the "Pride of Detroit," the "Royal Windsor" and the "Sir John Carling" were all making last preparations for trans-Atlantic flights. and it became known that King Rivalry existed for the honor of flying the first plane ever to fly from North America to England.
