The following extract of a letter to the Rev. Bishop White, at Philadelphia, has been obligingly handed to us for publication. It presents a cheering view of the efforts made to diffuse the light of the Gospel throughout the world and no doubt, it will be pleasing to our Readers, to see that amidst the clangor of arms and the horrors of war, that agitate the nations; the interests of the Christian Religion are attended to in a manner peculiarly adapted to advance them.
"According to this time, it shall be said, what hath God wrought? Europe and America yea, the whole world presents at this period, (1814.) such a contradiction of signs and wonders! On the one hand, awful confusion and distress of nations, on the other, the most glorious and effectual exertions are making to spread the Bible and Bible Christianity throughout the earth. But I could hardly, within the compass of a thousand letters, tell you all I know and feel, and fear and hope, or the sons & daughters of men; but I will tell you enough, dear Sir, to gladden your heart and leave you to imagine the rest.
The British and Foreign Bible Society, which commenced its operations in London in 1804, has been blessed by the Almighty beyond all expectation or expression. Copying after this noble and pious institution, already have Bible societies been formed in every part of England and Scotland and Ireland, in Russia and Prussia in Denmark and Holland, in various parts of Germany, in Malta, Madeira, & at the Cape of Hope, in the Island of Ceylon, in Tranquebar, in Calcutta, in Serampore, in Morocco, in China, most every region of Asia. in all the various native languages are fifty millions of British subjects in India fed with this blessed bread from heaven, besides millions of Foreigners in Europe, Africa and America, and many in countries at war (or lately) with Great Britain. Yet still they the Holy Scriptures sent them by munificence of British Christians there is not I believe a Bible Society on earth, formed on a plan similar to the Parent Society in London, which has not received the blessings of the English in pecuniary aid, in advice, and in prayer.
The prayers and the tears of Christians are watering the word this life and making it go wonder in the earth.
Our Baltimore Bible Society received a cool sterling present from the London Bible Society by way of charity and, I believe every other stand has received some such mark of christian regard -There are now three Bible Societies in the U States.
The first society of the kind for in this country, was the Philadelphia Bible Society-[In that city a London Bible Society has been lately introduced As soon as an account of this society arrived in London the managers of British and Foreign Bible Society sent with one heart and one mind in money a token of their brotherly affection.
Sayrna in Turkey, Iceland & London, Sierre Leon, and almost in every place where a human heart and a human eye can be found do they read in their own language, the PRECIOUS BOOK OF GOD.
Thousands, yea, tens of thousands Bibles and Testaments, without note or comment, have they printed and dispersed or caused to be printed and dispersed through the earth-English gives away yearly more than two hundred thousand dollars worth of printed Scriptures, and if this is not enough they will go on in this labour of love and disperse a million of dollars yearly, until by and by the Millennium of Christ shall commence, and the four quarters of the earth shall shout to each other, four great Hallelujahs, and say the LORD GOD OMNIPOTENT REIGNETH! Amen End.
The Bible -Society in England crowded at the times of their stated meetings with the first characters of church and state-Princes and nobles and bishops, and great men and good men, and women too of all ranks, of all denominations, unite heart with heart and hand with hand, to make a great effort by Bible Societies and Missionary Societies to pull down the devil's kingdom and set up the Redeemer's kingdom in its place. My soul, good Sir, and your soul responsively say "Amen and prosper."-Further, last year a bill was passed in the British parliament to open a wide door for the spread of Christianity in Asia -Glory be to God-Amen."
