Georgia Trip Again Postponed; General Condition Fine
SENDS REGRETS
MIAMI, Fla.-(SNS)
Because of what he described as delayed healing of his gum, President Roosevelt decided to make his vacation three days shorter by returning to Washington today.
The extraction of an infected tooth November 18. left a double pocket containing poison, which was absorbed by the President's system. One of these openings was drained when he left for Washington November 27, for his fishing cruise on which he hoped to regain strength.
However, the chief executive's general condition was described as excellent by officials at the temporary White House headquarters here, but pointed out that he could not get the dental treatment on the boat that he could obtain in Washington.
Hence the visit to Warm Springs. and Gainesville. Ga., has been postponed for the second time. In a message to Secretary Marvin McIntyre here, the President deems it advisable to return directly to Washington.
The President first noticed the aching tooth on the night of November 15. He lost a lot of sleep that night and next morning Captain Ross T. McIntire, naval physician, and Lieutenant Commander Yando, naval dentist, were called in.
The condition was accompanied by a slight temperature which hung on for several days.
Dr. Yando tried to save the tooth but decided to remove it November 18. Meanwhile, the President's condition was aggravated by a stomach disorder officially described as "gastro-intestinal" which was quickly remedied.
Once the President's jaw was swollen to the size on a grape fruit, an aide said.
Aboard the Potomac with the President, is Dr. McIntire, The naval dentist remained in Washington.
The President will reach Washington Monday evening instead of Thursday as was originally planned. He was to have landed here Monday and gone on to Warm Springs for a 24-hour visit. including a belated Thanksgiving dinner with the infantile paralysis patients there. He had also planned to speak at the dedication of a square named for him at Gainesville. His regrets to officials of both places were expressed through his secretary, who said that the President would make the visits later on.
The Potomac, the chief executive's craft. which is 300 miles southwest of here, will reach Miami around 2 p. m. Sunday, and a half hour later, the President will leave by special train for Washington.
