NEED OF 15,000 MEN
(From Friday's Daily.)
Expansion of the Air Service of the United States Army is forecast in an appeal addressed to the newspapers to inform young men of the opportunities for enlistment in this branch of the service. Headquarters for the Southern Department at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, is now ready to accept enlistments in the Air Service to replace men who are being discharged from the draft camps.
The following from a letter received yesterday, embodies the spirit of the appeal:
"The manufacturer of aircraft is bound to be a large enterprise in the future. Enlistment in the air service of the army affords a man the opportunity of securing a thorough mechanical schooling in one of the air service schools, learning his business and then having two years actual experience working in the shops and fields of the army, thereby fitting him at the end of that time to secure a position in civilian life with one of the aircraft manufacturing companies. At the present time the Aeronautical Manufacturing Companies have as many experienced mechanics and workers in their factories as they have places for. It is a well established fact that the aircraft industry is going to be many times larger than it is at the present time.
The Aircraft Manufacturing Association states that it will be about three years before aircraft manufacturing is firmly established. At that time experienced and skilled mechanics will be required for airplane work. The air service is the only place available now to get that training. Men interested in the manufacture of aircraft should lose no time in enlisting, as rapid response is being made to the call for 15,000 men and the desired quota will soon be filled and enlistments closed. This is a chance that comes once in a man's life and must be taken now, as only a limited number of men can be trained."
