THE MURDERERS.

The confession, &c. of Garcia and Castillano, has been published by Mr. Geo. W. Lyford, at Norfolk: and according to the remarks of the Norfolk editors, it is an interesting pamphlet of 64 pages. We cannot help remarking the extraordinary fact, that, not only does each of the murderers protest his own innocence, but denounces his companion as the sole perpetrator of the murder!—Thus, Garcia asserts that the foul deed was done by Castillano, while he (G.) was asleep—That, startled by the cries of Lagoardette, he jumped from his pallet and besought Castillano to spare his victim, &c. While Castillano on the other hand, declares that he left Garcia and Lagoardette together in the house, on the morning of the 20th March, and went away to get breakfast; that he was some time after joined by Garcia, and after a while returned with him to the house, on entering which, he, Castillano, saw for the first time, the butchered body of Lagoardette. That men whose lives were a perpetual scene of villany and abomination should be capable of falsehood, even on the brink of eternity (though it is difficult to imagine what could be their motive for it,) is not so strange; but it is inconceivably horrible that they should have attempted to sanctify their falsehoods by the most awful and solemn appeals to that Omniscient Judge to whom the secrets of all hearts are disclosed. Such enormous profanation and hypocrisy we could not have supposed even the most abandoned to have been capable of. From the language in which these confessions are couched, it is evident that both the writers had been liberally educated; particularly Garcia, who expresses himself with much ease, and even purity of style.
