WASHINGTON- The pennant races have developed two stirring questions now on the lips of every baseball fan. The first one is: Can the Giants do the things in late summer and September that they did in June?
And in the American League, the question is whether the old pros, the Yankees, can put the whammy once again on Cleveland and Chicago. As the Yanks completed their recent western swing-the last time eastern and western clubs met prior to the All-Star game-they had passed the acid test on the road.
They had taken their series with Chicago, and two out of three at Cleveland. In the back yards' of the two challengers, the Yankees had come through. They stopped Cleveland the first night 11-0. They took the second game 11-9. The Indians, using Tiger castoff Hal Newhouser, barely managed to win the final game 4-3.
At Chicago the Yankees took the first three games of four, before they ran into another old Tiger Virgil Trucks. He salvaged the last game for the Sox.
If the Yankees can continue to beat the toughest challengers, they will probably win the flag again this year. Cleveland or Chicago must learn how to knock the champions down hard to win the flag. And that isn't easy to do. Thus the New Yorkers' chances look better now than they did a while back.
It is too early to predict the outcome of the battle between New York and Brooklyn. If the Giants stay hot, they have a fifty-fifty chance. If the Dodgers win the flag this year, chances are the Giants will slip long before the crucial last days of September.
