Full Text
The following is an extract from the remarks of the Savannah (Geo.) Republican, upon hoisting the Clay flag. See to what necessity the Locos would be reduced, if compelled to nominate Calhoun for President, as a reward for embracing their cause. The remarks would apply as well to the whole party as to the Unionists of Georgia.
"We raise the banner of Henry Clay, then, and in conclusion we can express no wish more friendly to our opponents than they, the Unionists, (Heaven save the mark!) may not be reduced to the unpleasant alternative of embracing the genius of nullification. It is an old saying, that "adversity makes us acquainted with strange bed-fellows," so it may be said of unrelenting political expediency, when it pervades us, to take to our arms again, those whom we had once indignantly kicked out of bed."
