Fleet Officers Capture Thug Gunman Wounded in Mile Long Chase

DETROIT, Sept. 2 -- (AP) - A holdup suspect identified as a fugitive from the Illinois State Penitentiary at Joliet, Ill., was shot and captured by two fleet police patrolmen yesterday in a mile-long chase down alleys and through backyards.

Through fingerprints taken at Receiving Hospital the police identified their captive as John D. Curtin, 24, who escaped from the Illinois prison last Aug. 14 while serving a sentence for robbery armed in Chicago.

The suspect was captured after a shot by Patrolman Lloyd Kramer struck him in the back. In the man's pockets was found $594 in cash and checks taken from a Gratiot Avenue branch of the Household Finance Corporation. Kramer and Patrolman Harry Leopold, answering an alarm, reached the vicinity shortly after the holdup.

The officers tried to stop and question a man hurrying down the street only to have him draw a pistol and start shooting. The chase and capture followed.
