Family Service Bureau Provides For Many

EDITOR'S NOTE: Loretta Crossley and Elaine Hunt, Ypsilanti High School students in the following article outline what services the Family Welfare Bureau provides in Ypsilanti. The Bureau Is an agency which participates in Community Fund.

By Loretta Crossley and Elaine Hunt

The Family Service Bureau helps a person get a job when he comes and asks for help. This person explains his situation and the Bureau tries to find a position he can fill.

The Bureau also tries to place delinquent children at the home at Lapeer. The children who are placed there are children who are troublesome at school and are liable to become a menace to society. At this home the children are adjusted so they can return to, and be a part of society.

When the Bureau knows of a family where there is a feeble minded child, they try to persuade the parents of this child to place it in a school where the needed special training is available.

The Bureau also tries to place insane people in a state hospital where they can get the care they need.

If the Bureau finds a homeless child it tries to find a home for this child. If there is more than one child in the same family, they try to keep them together by placing them in a boarding house.

The children of poor families are provided with shoes either second hand or new. The shoe store proprietors cooperate by giving a discount in such cases. They are also provided with clothes. These also are new or second-hand. Some of the clothing can be worn as it is, others are made over into very attractive clothing.

The Bureau also sells relief to families who need it. That is to provide food, clothing, fuel, and so forth, until a job can be secured for the bread winner of the family.

Used furniture is also distributed. This is furniture brought to the Bureau office by those who do not need it.

The Bureau also distributes baskets at Thanksgiving and baskets and toys at Christmas. Various organizations help to fill and distribute these baskets.

The office of the Family Service Bureau is located on the second floor of the City Hall and is directed by Miss Inez Graves.
