April 6. Ministry, it is said, have it in contemplation greatly to lower, if not totally to annihilate, the duties upon French wines; conditionally, however, that the Court of France shall make a proportionate reduction in the duties upon some articles of British produce and manufactures. It is certain that something of this nature is intended to be done, in consequence of the edict published lately at Lisbon, purporting, that after the vintage of 1785, all the vineyards in the valleys shall be destroyed, and only the mountainous and other parts of the country, that are not adapted to the cultivation of grain, grass, &c. shall be made use of for the growth of vines.
