A Rebuke.—We quoted, yesterday, and commented upon some uncalled for remarks of the Express in reference to the employment of a Douglas Democrat upon the Democratic Standard. The Standard treats the matter in the following dignified yet cutting style: We clip the foregoing from the Marysville Express of yesterday, not for the purpose of expressing any opinion upon the censure cast upon Governor Weller, but to remove an impertinent interference with our private affairs. It is true that Mr. George C. Gorham is an employee of the editor of the Standard. Mr. Gorham sought employment from the editor of this paper with a full knowledge on our part of his political antecedents; he obtained it, and will keep it as long as his conduct gives us as much satisfaction as it has done during the short period of his connection with the office. Mr. Gorham exercises no control over the columns of the Standard: everything that is written or selected for the paper is done under the control and direction of the ostensible editor of the paper; for every word, even to the dotting of an i, or the crossing of a t, he, and he alone, is responsible. We appoint to no office, we dispense no patronage of the party. Professing to edit a party paper, we are responsible to the party for every word that appears in the paper. If we furnish a journal that is satisfactory to our patrons, for the means to which we resort in procuring them amusement or instruction, we are accountable to nobody. The public has no more right to inquire into the politics of our assistants, than a guest would have to rate his host who served him to his satisfaction for the morals of his cook. It may be that we edit our paper by a compact with the Devil: that is not the business of the editor of the Marysville Express. If any other than a friend had taken the liberty of interfering in our private affairs, we should have been tempted to say something severe to him: as it is, we excuse it for the sake of old companionship.
