GENTLEMEN,

By inserting the following verses in your next gazette you will much oblige

A CUSTOMER.

Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis.

Britain! Britain! whom of late
We reverenc'd as our parent state,
For the advancement of whose power
We spent in toil the tedious hour,
And to preserve whose honour still
Injur'd America doth will,
If in the rights of Englishmen
Thou wilt establish them again:
How long involv'd in civil war
Shall thy renown'd dominions jar?
How long delight, with cruel slaughter,
To spill thy people's blood like water?
Forgetful of thy ancient glory,
Wherein thou so excell'st in story,
Degenerate grown! thy mighty arm
To neighbouring states gives no alarm;
Regardless, they thy force defy,
Tread under foot thy dignity,
And, loading thee with abjuration,
Exclaim! how fallen is that nation!
Ere it's too late, learn to be wise;
Let past iniquities suffice,
Expel for ever from among ye
Those men whose only aim's to wrong ye,
And justice, long thrust out of doors,
Once more permit us to call yours.
This, well attended to, will prove
Fit object of your care and love;
'Twill bring you comforts unexpected
Below, above, eternal rest.
And may that author of all things,
The Lord of Lords, and King of Kings,
Direct, and to this happy end
Make all your consultations tend.
