POETRY.
The following is an Extract from a Poem, by Bishop Heber, entitled Palestine. The whole of that writer's Poetical Works have been collected and published by Messrs. Carey, Lea & Carey:
Yet still destruction sweeps the lonely plain,
And heroes lift their generous swords in vain.
Still o'er her sky the clouds of wrath impend,
And God's revenge hangs heavy on her soul.
Yet shall she rise—but not by war's red hand,
Not bathed in murder, planted by the sword.
Yes, Salem, thou shalt rise! The Power that said
Shall heal the wound his chastening hand has made,
Shall judge the proud oppressor, who so long
Has crushed thy sons, and cast thy rights away;
And banish hence his brazen bands, and cast his cords away.
Then on your tops shall deathless verdure spring,
Break forth, ye mountains, and ye valleys sing!
No more your trackless wilds of thorn shall bloom,
The desert isles of 's jest, the heart's sra.
The holy smiles shall ten fall heaven's shield,
And new Dstou deck the tiny beld.
Repent, perchance, wide waving o'er the land,
That mighty Angel hides his golden wand.
Courts the bright vision of the ceasing power,
Tells every r hand means every tower,
And while the tyrants that yet detain
