Arrived at Gloucester on Sunday last, schr. Betsey, Captain Haskell, 28 days from Bordeaux. Brings very little news. The captain informs that French troops were returning very fast from Spain and immediately march to the north. They were not allowed to stop in Bordeaux more than 12 hours. The reasons given for their returning from Spain were that it was conquered! It was believed that war with Russia had commenced. A gentleman high in office had been beheaded in Paris for giving information to a spy from the Russian court--Left the following vessels--Ship General Gates, of New York: brigs Zenobia and Tantivy do.; Regent do.; Lucy Evans, of Salem; schr. Matilda, Burton, Philadelphia; Baltimore, Vezy, Baltimore; Grace Ann Green, N. York; Arrow, Durkee, Baltimore.--In quarantine, a brig belonging to Baltimore, and schr. Ann, of New Orleans.
Sailed in company with schooner, of Baltimore, and Martha, of Philadelphia.
Mercantile friends have favored us with letters from Paris dated the 20th April, from intelligent Americans: their contents are in substance as follow:--"No prospect of a favorable arrangement with France, and people were surprised that Mr. Barlow should have ever indulged in the hope of it.--Napoleon had a grand army of 500,000 men ready for the northern expedition. Westphalia it was thought, would be annexed to France: Jerome to be transferred to Russian Poland, or elsewhere; But, such was the scarcity of provisions in France, and so serious and alarming were the disturbances in consequence, that many were of opinion the emperor could not leave France at a moment so critical. Riots had occurred in many provinces, and a bold tone of discontent was heard in Paris itself."
