LIGHT BREAKING IN UPON THE DARKNESS—SOME TERRIBLE STORIES ABOUT THE SUSPECTED MURDERER NOW UNDER ARREST—ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO BREAK JAIL.
CONCORD, N. H., Oct. 24.—LaPage, the suspected murderer of the school-girl, Josie Langmaid, made another desperate attempt to escape from the jail at this place, last night, and was placed in irons. The conviction of his guilt is deepening and it is desirable to hold him.
Terrible stories are told of the past life of LaPage. Three young girls have stated that they were chased by LaPage previous to the Pembroke murder. His wife, who is described as a woman heart-broken and worn out by grief, says that about five years ago he knocked down, severely beat, ravished and left for dead his sister-in-law. Previous to this he was arrested for desperate fighting and escaped while his legs were being tied. About two years ago he is said to have gone fifty miles and outraged a cousin and fled with a horse.
Strong evidence has been gathered to connect LaPage with the murder of the Ball girl, and birch withes, such as he is an expert at making, were found beside her body and also that of Josie Langmaid. LaPage has been known to chase girls in St. Albans, and his wife says that he has made attempts to ravish his daughter, fifteen years old, since living in Suncook, but was prevented by her interference. She states that they have all been afraid of their lives.
