POETRY.

For the R. I. Republican.

Man's Only Rest is Heaven.

THE rose that's gem'd with morning dew;
Its tints, how bright they glow ;
But soon the crimson folds will fade,
Are scatter'd neath its parent shade;
Emblem of Man below.
The mead upon its bosom bears,
Many a blushing Flow'r.
There daisies, wreath'd with waving green,
Nature's most fair, but transient scene;
Like man's short varied hour.
As the mown grass, our lives decay,
That withers e'er 'tis even.
The smiles of joy nor love can save
Each moment bears us to the grave;
Man's only rest is Heav'n.
