El Centro should know by the middle of January whether or not the State street grade separation project has been included in the highway commission budget for the next two years.
Inclusion in the budget represents the major obstacle between the project and final approval. Phil Knights, city engineer, said Saturday.
"If the project is included in the commission's budget for 1939-40 and 1940-41, it still has to be passed by the governor, the state legislature. the railway commission and the Bureau of Public Roads," he declared. "The commission's budget usually is presented to the governor around the middle of January."
Knights indicated. however. that inclusion in the budget is most important at present and in event of that approval he expected favorable action from the railway commission and the bureau.
Indicating that the project is slated to be considered by the highway commission within a few days, photographs of Main street at the railway tracks, showing present traffic difficulties, were sent to District Engineer E. E. Wallace this week to aid Wallace in presenting the project before the commissioners.
All further hearings of the commission will be closed to the public.
