MADISON, Wis., Aug. 4. Robert M. LaFollette announced today that he would be a candidate to succeed his father as United States senator.

The brief announcement of his candidacy consisted of two sentences. It said:

"I am a candidate for United States senator. In a short time I shall issue a complete statement."

Young LaFollette's announcement came a few days after his mother announced she would not be a candidate succeed her late husband.
