Trouble Breaks Out In
Two Places - Commander Shot And
Seriously Hurt.
HAVANA, Aug. 22.—(P)Serious
trouble within the Cuban army in
at least two places was reliably reported
today and, in anticipation
of general disorders, all Havana
police were held in barracks and
leaves were cancelled.
It was reported semi-officially
that Lieut. Col. Hernandez, a military
commander in Pinar del Rio
province, was shot and gravely
wounded by two soldiers who attempted
to arrest him on a charge
that he had participated in a conspiracy
against the government.
The report stated that Colonel
Hernandez had resisted the soldiers
at his home.
Reports also were received of a
disorder at Camp Columbia. It was
said that a raid was made on the
home of Major Echevarria, commander
of the third battalion at
Columbia, but that he escaped
from officers who sought to arrest
him. Later his brother, a lieutenant
of police, was arrested on
a conspiracy charge.
The orders for the arrest were
issued by Major Manuel Benitez

Reports of plots to overthrow the government were said to have been submitted to the meeting.
Hernandez was one of the leaders of the loyal forces in the battle at Atares in November, 1933. He was generally credited with killing the famous rebel leader, Juan Blas-Hernandez.
