Full Text

Under the chairmanship of ex-Senator John F. Lewis, the Committee of One Hundred appointed at the recent kickers' Republican Convention met in Washington yesterday and issued an address to the republican voters of Virginia. It rehearses the reasons for the Roanoke Convention; announces that the Herald of that place will be started as a republican organ, and urges republican voters to do what is yet possible within the next twenty days to preserve the party from complete overthrow. Whenever candidates shall be, or have been named the voters are to do that it is their plain duty to give them every possible support, even where they favor the present State management. The letter concludes: "As it has been announced, as one reason for abandoning the campaign, that the republican party of the nation refuses to furnish any further financial aid, it may be well for us to inquire if we have not provoked their refusal by the fact that of all the tens of thousands sent here during the last eight years not one account has been rendered, not one voucher filed, or an auditing committee commissioned. And to emphasize the prudence of the present movement, we await your action with the confident belief that the motto 'Mountaineers are always free' will not be appropriated alone by our brethren beyond the crest of the Alleghanies."
