THE TEXAS VIEW
Texans have every right to feel proud of their state at this time. A man who was born in the Red River country and now lives in Uvalde is foremost choice of most citizens for America's foremost honor. John Garner is not a happy combination of blood and bone whose parents happened to be within the Lone Star State's boundaries when he was born.
John Garner, in antecedents, in demeanor and in viewpoint, is Texas to the core.
So typical of Texas is the citizen of Uvalde that his popularity might well be taken as endorsement of the Texas way of thinking. That way presupposes not only the right but the urge of every man to go forward in a land full of opportunity.
"It's a great world. Look at our resources. The sky's the limit. I want to go places and do things. Most people are friends. Howdy, neighbor. Let's run that guy out of town." Abhorrent to the Texas viewpoint are such things as conceit, sham, arrogance, selfishness and deception. Texas was founded by adventurous pioneers who believed there was a right way and a wrong way to do things. The sons and daughters of these pioneers have not yet learned to compromise between the two.
It would be a fitting milestone in the process of Texas if one of its true citizens could be the instrument of bringing back to America a renewed hope in living, a revived faith in one's individual powers, a return to fundamental honesty in government.
