JUNEAU (AP) - Public Safety Commissioner Martin Underwood said today he personally gave the orders which resulted in a series of gambling arrests in the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas during the Nov. 25 weekend
Most of the arrests were made in connection with the operation of football pools. City Police and State Police cooperated in the arrests, which were made on the last big weekend of college football for 1961.
Underwood's aid instructions went to District State Police commanders at Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks to investigate operation of the football pools and to make the necessary arrests.
"The investigation had a two-fold purpose." Underwood said.
"First. we wanted to find out who the ringleaders were.
"Secondly, we wanted to find out if there was a tie-in between Anchorage and Fairbanks or between Alaska and the states."
