Phil: True American.

Captain Pierce, of the Eliza Pigot, sailed from Lisbon on the first of June, at which time American cord paid a tolerable profit. Flour was less in price than at this market.

Captain P. read London papers at Duffr house, as late as the 10th of May, which contained a good deal of news from France relative to the disturbances in that unsettled country, and of the probability of a further change in the French ministry.
Since our arrest, another subject of England, Mr. James Smith, was detained in the prison of the Prefecture for 72 days, although during that time he had thrice nearly perished through the want of air and exercise, as the physician of the Prefecture has himself declared. He was told at every interrogatory that he would be made to submit. "You shall have your liberty as soon as you have given up the names of the two Frenchmen to whom you alluded in your letters," and these letters were nothing but a family correspondence which Mr. Smith kept up in the months of September, October, and November last. Mr. Smith firmly refused to satisfy the curiosity of the police; and as he remained inflexible, and all persecution was found useless, he was transferred to the house of arrests of La Force, where he has remained twenty-eight days, and where he still is, without knowing what fate awaits him.

The Journals have announced that the Pope has abolished the inquisition in his states, and that he has communicated his act of abolition to the court of Spain, when the constitutional assembly abolished every species of torture in France, Sardinia and Holland did the same in the same year.
