Naval Appointments.—The National Intelligencer contains an authorized statement from the Navy Department, which is important to young men applying for Midshipmen's Warrants; and not merely interesting and important to them and their friends, but interesting to the people of the United States.— The Administration which has recently gone out of power furnished full proof throughout its career, of the reckless disregard of principle with which it was conducted; but, in no point is its meanness more palpable than in the indecent haste with which it pushed its favorites into office upon the very point of its own political death, and after it had been solemnly admonished a most emphatic voice of the people, that the men to be appointed were condemned by the popular opinion. We would speak respectfully of Mr. Van Buren and his Cabinet advisers—at least as respectfully as possible—but there is no excuse for the virtually fraudulent foisting into a life-office such men as Peter V. Daniel of Virginia, and for such death-bed legacies as the nearly defunct President left to the people in several other instances. Of the appointments in the Naval service the Intelligencer thus speaks:
MIDSHIPMEN'S APPOINTMENTS.
"Many applications having been made, as we understand, to the Navy Department, from almost all parts of the country, for Midshipmen's appointments, it seems proper to state, in order to save trouble and disappointment, that we have ascertained that, before the expiration of the term of the late Administration, not only every vacancy in the authorized number of such appointments had been filled, but several appointments had been made in advance of that number. It is not, therefore, within the power of the Secretary to make a single appointment in that branch and class of the service, nor will he until the authorized number of Midshipmen be augmented, (as probably, in reference to the public interest, it ought to be,) or until extensive promotions shall be made in the Naval Service."
