Newsreel cameramen from leading motion picture studios will be on hand Sunday at Port Isabel to record on the celluloid for the nation at large and posterity the wonders and sights of the First Annual Rio Grande Valley Fishing Rodeo.
Word was received by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce Saturday of their pending arrival and the local chamber has been asked to supply at least two bathing girls to add a little local color to the scene.
The victims of Old Sol's rays were not named late Saturday but two of the city's specimen of feminine pulchritude are expected to attend the closing day of the fish carnival.
RECORDS GO BY BOARD IN THE TARPON RODEO
Anglers From Many States Have Good Luck In First Contest At Point Isabel.
PORT ISABEL, Aug. 11-(Sp)—Many a "Silver King" of the deep water has felt the barb of the angler's hook and responded with a thrilling leap into the air and a tail over the waves during the five days of the First Annual Rio Grande Valley Fishing Rodeo which closes with a full program today.
All records for tarpon catches on coast waters have gone by the board as rivalry for the lead and title of champion fisherman has spurred entrants to greater efforts at snagging game fish of these waters during weather that could scarcely be improved.
Not only have tarpon "bit the dust", but practically every other king of game fish found in gulf waters, including king fish, bonita, jacks, trout, reds, drums and other varieties.
What is believed to be two world's records in tarpon fishing were established during the first two days of the rodeo when Mrs. D. M. Lide of Shreveport, La., brought two tarpon to gaff out of three strikes, for an average of .666. P. J. Neff of St. Louis, assistant vice president of the Missouri Pacific lines, landed three tarpon out of five strikes and is batting .600. Neff failed to catch a tarpon during the opening day.
Unusual Records
Veteran silver king anglers declare these to be unusual records as the average is one tarpon out of seven strikes.
David M. Lide of Shreveport increased his lead by landing two silver kings Friday, bring his total to 4.110. Neff is second with 3.060 and Dr. I. Henry Smith of Shreveport third with 3.020. Mrs. Lide leads the woman's division with 1,500 points to her credit.
With continued good weather, rodeo officials expressed the opinion that a record for Texas coast tarpon catches would be established before the rodeo closes Sunday afternoon at 2 p. m. At that hour whistles will be blown and cannons fired as a stop signal and all fish must be reported by 3 p. m.
At 3:30 p. m. a program will be presented when features will include human fishing contest, porpoise riding exhibition, parachute jump by Miss Martha Stadler and stunt flying.
