PARIS, December 21.

" The representative of the people " Mercier has just informed us in a " journal he published that Condorcet is "no more!

" We believed,-hoped him to be still alive !

" His Widow applied to the Conven- " tion for the ashes of her unhappy . husband, but her letter was not read !"

The literary world loses in Condorcet the most distinguished author of the present age, society a friend of humani- ty, the republic a virtuous citizen and an eminent legislator, mankind an inde- fatigable and profound instructor, and posterity will decide the rank which he deserves among those philosophers who have disclosed the true politics of nations and perfected the great art of governing

The slight reception madame Con- dorcet's letter met with leads us to sup- pose that Condorcet, the most respecta- ble victim of Robespierre, did not share the good fate of the 73 deputies read- mitted into the convention, perhaps be- cause he was once called marquis de Condorcet ; What are the charges a- gainst him by his enemies ? his candor, superior talents, his resolution to never the right of a freeman in speaking his opinion, a blameless and honorable con- duct in private and public life. He was indeed no Marat but he was a pure re- publican and one of the founders of the republic ; Chabot accused him of ha- ving wrote a libel on the new constituti- on, because Condorcet had published his opinion on this great achievement of the convention : Condorcet was arrested and his enemy? Chabot condemned for bribery, Danton died as a conspira- tor, Marat in the pantheon occupies the post of danger where the great Mira- beau fell, and Tallien pretends to be at the head of the convention. The de- tractors of Condorcet may continue to censure him for having been a man ; they may refuse him the merit due to his vir- tues and patriotism ; Condorcet wants no funeral pomp to announce him to the world, his memory is dear to all who knew him, and his genius has raised a monument more desirable than those of noble and more immortal than pom- pous structures. The name of Condor- cet is a pantheon.
