LABOR LEADERS GIVE INTERESTING TALK TO LARGE AUDIENCE FRIDAY EVENING
An interesting lecture, illustrated with lantern slides, was given at the Progressive club hall on the West side Friday evening under the auspices of the striking papermakers of this city.
Geo. M. Snyder, first vice-president of the International Brotherhood of Papermakers, was the principal speaker, assisted by E. G. Hall, president of the state federation of labor.
In his talk Mr. Snyder told of the organizing of the local union in 1910, and the reason for organizing, that of getting shorter hours, better surroundings and living wages. He stated that the officers of the company were opposed to the organization from the time it was proposed, and that they refused the representatives of the union an interview, but stated that they would discuss the matter with the employes. He said that the company could intimidate the employes so as to avert such action but that they had nothing on the officers of the union.
Mr. Hall, in his address, spoke on the conditions in the different mills where eight-hour shifts exist and also where the old shifts of eleven and thirteen hours are worked. He threw a number of pictures on the screen, showing mills which were kept in a sanitary condition as compared with the unsanitary.
The lecture was attended by a large and appreciative audience, after which a benefit dance was given by the strikers in the same hall. The lecture and dance was a success in every respect and netted the strikers a neat sum, with which to help carry on the fight. Several of the men with families who have been living in the company's houses have been forced out because of their inability to pay rent when due, and the houses have been turned over to the strike breakers.
