THE GENERAL COURT-MARTIAL.

The State vs. Capt. Lesseps Continued

Examination of Witnesses.

The court-martial convened by the Governor met again last evening at 7:30, pursuant to adjournment. The case of Capt. Alexander Lesseps, Orleans Artillery, was continued. The only witness examined was Lieut. Daniel Hauck, Orleans Artillery, who was examined and cross-examined at length. The principal fact adduced by this witness was that Capt. Lesseps had been a party to the organization of the Orleans Field Artillery, and that he had tendered his resignation to Col. Vinet, commanding the Orleans Artillery. Witness deposed that when Capt. Lesseps had received the order of Col. Vinet to be present at the special meeting of officers, March 22, 1878, he refused to obey it, "being disgusted with the Orleans Artillery."

The witness was very guarded, and evidence was extorted with much difficulty. Many objections were made by the accused, urged thereto by his counsel and amicus curiae, Capt. Gabriel Fernandez, First Infantry. All the members of the court were present, except Major G. La Gardeur, Louisiana Field Artillery, who was excused on motion of the judge advocate, he not being present at the opening of the case. When the examination of Lieut. Hauck had been concluded, the court adjourned at 10 p. m., to meet this evening at 7:30 o'clock.

There were many spectators present, chiefly military men. This evening Col. Vinet and Capt. Sambola are billed for examination on the part of the prosecution, and Gov. Nicholls and Adjutant General Patton have been subpoenaed to appear Friday evening, also on behalf of the State.
