SMITHFIELD, Sept. 10th, 1832.
Sir—By request I forward you the foregoing resolutions for publication. You may tell a certain correspondent of yours, that this is no manoeuvre of the Clay men: there was not a Clay man at the meeting. I think sending one of your papers to the Chairman and Secretary of our meeting may be the means of adding a respectable name or two to the list of your subscribers, you will recognise me as already a subscriber.
Yours respectfully,
E. SMITH.
To A. Bynum, Esq
(COPY.)
At a numerous meeting of the citizens of Amite county assembled at Green's store on the 8th September 1832, Walter Cotes, Esq. was called to the chair, and John B. Harrington appointed Secretary. E Smith, after expressing the object of the meeting, offered the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted:
1st. Resolved, That we concur with our fellow citizens of Pike, and other counties of this state, in nominating Philip P. Barbour of Virginia; whose well known political principles, patriotism, and great talents, eminently qualify him for the office of Vice President of the United States.
2d. Resolved, That we have not been able to discover in the political course of Martin Van Buren, satisfactory evidence of his attachment to the political principles which we, in common with a large majority of the people of the South profess and therefore, we cannot support him for the high and responsible station of Vice President
3d, Resolved, That Richard A. Stewart, Esq. be appointed as a delegate to represent this meeting, as well as other citizens of the county who concur with us, in the convention to be held at Jackson for the purpose of nominating an electoral ticket, pledged to vote for P. P. Barbour, for the office of Vice President, with Andrew Jackson for President.
4th. Resolved, that the proceedings of this meeting be signed by the Chairman and Secretary, and a copy of the same be transmitted to the Editor of the Southern Planter for publication.
WALTER COTES, Chairman,
JOHN B. HARRINGTON, Secretary.
