Gruesome Tale
Unfolds On Red
Atrocities
BY ALVIN SPIVAK
WASHINGTON- (INS)
An
army war crimes investigator told
Friday how Korean communists tor-
tured five American prisoners with
heated bamboo spears, then stabbed
them and left them to die.
Lt. Col. John W. Gorn of Ann Ar-
bor, Mich., related the grisly inci-
dent before a Senate Investigations
Subcommittee after his former Chief
Col. James Hanley, labeled Red a-
trocities in Korea a "definite pat-
tern" of murder.
Hanley accused the Reds of kill-
ing "tens of thousands" of South
Koreans and Americans - men,
women and children - and added:
"How many were killed is impos-
sible to know. We can only esti-
mate."
Sen. Charles E. Potter, himself a
legless veteran of World War II, is
acting as a one-man subcommittee
as a continuing flow of witnesses
detailed the horrible story of tor-
ture and mass slaughter.
FRIDAY'S TESTIMONY
Potter heard this other testi-
mony:
1. Former Cpl. Frederick J. Her-
mann of Evansville, Ind., said he
and five other prisoners "played
dead" when their Red captors shot
and killed seven others. He identi-
fied a photograph of the scene and
said the shooting took place in front
of a communist poster accusing the
South Koreans of brutalities.
2. Capt. Linton J. Buttrey of
Nashville, Tenn., recalled how Red
guards shot a chaplain while he was
administering last rites to a litter
patient.
3. Lt. Col. James T. Rogers of
Greenwood, S. C., confirmed Gorn's
description of the "Bamboo Spear
Case" and said his examination of
the victims' wounds showed that
"the instruments of torture were
previously heated and, after tortur-
ing them with these instruments,
the guards bayonetted them with
them and allowed them to bleed to
death."
SHOT IN BACK
4. Former Cpl. Arturo J. Jaramil-
lo of Pueblo, Colo., said he and two
fellow captives were shot in the
back by a North Korean guard who
followed them after forcing them to
run along a road. Wounded, he and
a sergeant who also survived, hid in
the snow-covered countryside for
19 days. When the veteran, whose
frozen toes were amputated, said he
is unemployed, Potter indicated he
would try to help him find a job.
