THE FREEMAN:
FREMONT, OHIO.
J. S. FOUKE, Editor.
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1, 1851.
The Result.
The smoke of the late election-never very thick-has cleared away, and the result is entirely satisfactory to the-"Democracy."
So far as the returns have been published by the Columbus papers, it appears that Wood's majority for Governor will be about 20,000. On the remainder of the State ticket, the Locofoco majority will be about the same, with the exceptions of the candidates for Auditor, Treasurer, and two of the Supreme Judges. On these the Loco majority will be from five to ten thousand majority each.
By the aid of the Locofoco Constitutional Gerrymander, their majority in the Legislature is more overwhelming than it is on the State ticket. The Senate stands 26 Locofocos, 8 Whigs, and one Free Soiler. The House 67 Locofocos, 27 Whigs, and 2 Free Soilers.
Our opponents now have every thing their own way, and we expect them to fulfill their many promises to the people. Let them now establish their hard money system, by the repeal of our present banking laws, and making it a penal offence to pass paper money of any kind. Let them repeal the present tax law, which they claimed, before the election, operated so unequally upon the people. Let them reduce the expenditures of the State, and the salaries of its officers, which were said to be so enormously extravagant. In fact, let them fulfil but one half of their many promises, and we venture to predict, that within less than five years, the people will gladly return to Whig rule and Whig measures.
