Extract of a letter from Mr. Curtis Crane, mate of the brig James, of Hartford, to his owners, dated September 24th, 1801, at Sandy Point, St. Kitts.

" I take this opportunity to inform you of my arrival at Barbadoes, with the James, after a passage of 46 days, also of the death of capt. Thomas Smith, on the 5th of August, after a distressing illness of 6 days ; his disorder was the black fever, which we suppose he took on board the Spanish privateer that robbed us in the Gulph of one ox, one bbl. of beef, one bbl. corn, three firkins lard, seven casks water, our clothes, all our small stock, and threatened us with instant death, if we did not obey them in every respect."
