Superintendent of Public School.
MOOREFIELD, W. VA., February 22, 1876.

The time is rapidly approaching when the people will be called upon to select a man to fill the place of State Superintendent of Public Schools. It is important that a thoroughly competent man should be selected. The success of the Democratic party depends mainly upon the kind of metal that is to compose its State ticket. The time for light, doubtful weights, has passed. Nothing short of first-class intellect, cultured and properly trained, will satisfy the demand of the people. Such men must not be sought among the politicians, whose honesty and fidelity are made secondary considerations--not that a politician can't be an honest, faithful man. I know there are honest politicians, but like "angels visits they are few and far between."
Politics is a trade, and little dirty tricks are very common among those who dabble in them.
Looking around for a suitable man for the above named position, I know of no one better qualified by education and experience than Mr. James W. Johnson, of Franklin, Pendleton county. Mr. Johnson is about 37 years of age, and has past the last fifteen years in teaching. He is a blind man, and is a brother to Hon. H. Johnson, who traveled over a large portion of this State a few years since in the interests of the Blind Institute at Romney. That noble institution is the work of these two brothers, one of whom is now a teacher in the institution. Mr. Johnson is thoroughly acquainted with the school laws of the State, understands its needs, and will, if elected, fill the position named and make an efficient officer. I hope the convention soon to assemble in this State will not over look the claims of Mr. Johnson.
This communication is written without his knowledge. I do not know that he desires the place, but I do know that the selections of such men to compose the Democratic ticket will secure an overwhelming Democratic triumph.
There is beginning to be some interest manifested by the Democracy of this section in the approaching election. The subject is frequently mentioned and the fitness of men for the positions to be filled is freely discussed.
Give us a ticket free from the contaminating influences of corrupt politicians and our course is safe. With corrupt men at the head of our ticket defeat is certain.
