Full Text

Hampton, (Connecticut,) July 9, 1787.

Last Tuesday afternoon the frame of a large dwelling-house, the roof only covered, and the walls partly enclosed, belonged to Mr. Aaron Goodell, of this place, was struck by lightning, which first beat a few bricks from the top of the chimney; it then entered the ridge pole of the house, thence taking its course down even of the rafters, and entering the body of the frame: violence marked its way through different posts and studs to the ground.

Five persons were in the house at the same time, who were all struck down; but happily no lives were lost, and the shock they received was but light; except a young man, son to Mr. Goodell, who lay for some minutes after the rest had recovered, and given up for dead; but happily revived, and has since recovered. What but the same Omnipotent Power that holds the balancing of the clouds, and controls those awful exertions of nature, could guard their lives from instant death. The Lord reigneth, let the earth rejoice: Yea, the Lord reigneth, let the people tremble.
